Interior design Tristan Auer & Denis Montel
Auer, who designed the rooms, was recently named “one of 10 best contemporary interior designers, stars of tomorrow” by Architectural Digest. Montel, who is responsible for the chic French Hermes boutiques around the world, is the man behind Les Bains’ ground-floor restaurant/salon. Perhaps Les Bains’ greatest achievement is its ability to present spaces that create vastly different moods.
Architecture Vincent Bastie
Prize-winning architect Vincent Bastie radically reconfigured the building, amplifying its volumes, while respecting its history and its grand façade. At Les Bains, the bar is a brilliant display of architectural daring. Ceilings curve, walls disappear into darkness, and lights reflect off surfaces that not only create mood but seem to bend time.
The Originals Jean-Pierre Marois
Art & Culture Street to high art
Two mosaics by Space Invader from 2002 are in place, joining David Rochline’s 1978 entrance mural. Owner Jean-Pierre Marois has invited some of these artists to take up permanent residence, where they produce work exclusively for Les Bains.
History An icon reborn
Warhol and Basquiat conspiring near the double-faced clock; Yves Saint Laurent under the David Rocheline frescoes; footsteps echoing across 19th-century floral tiles where Proust once walked. And the music reverberates—Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Prince—downstairs across the mosaic tile pool of a million late-night indiscretions.
